City of Boroondara
2010 Finalist: Local Government
The City of Boroondara’s The Glen Iris Wetlands project removes pollutants from the stormwater system before they enter Gardiners Creek. Treated water from the wetland is used to irrigate community sporting facilities, reducing the use of drinking water. Vegetation in the area has also improved with the planting of 10,000 native plants, trees, ground covers and 75 river red gums. The Council also provides educational tours of the site on sustainability for school groups.
